Choosing the right web site design firm to build a web site can be a minefield for any business person who is not 100% conversant with the Internet and how the search engines work. Regretfully, there are many web site designers in Birmingham who also fall into this category and know very little about the search engines.

If you need your web site to generate business through the search engines, there are a number of things that you need to at least know about, even if you don't fully understand them.

If you want a website that is going to be found through the search engines, then you need a website designer that you found by doing a search. If you found us through the search engines, then it stands to reason that we understand how to build websites that are search engine friendly.

WEB SITE DESIGN - POINTS YOU SHOULD KNOW

  • Most web sites are not built for the search engines. In fact the search engines cannot access the data stored on the majority of web sites. This seriously limits the number of visitors to these web sites, culminating in a lack of sales.

  • Website design often conflicts with the way a web site performs on the search engines. This is not the way it looks; this is the order that the source code is presented to the search engines.

  • Websites that are built by designers using programmes and not hard coding, also tend to send confusing messages to the search engines, restricting their ranking. Most cheap web sites are built by designers using off the shelf programmes.

  • Website optimisation has very little to do with keywords and Meta Tags. These play a minor role in optimising a web site for affordable search terms where the search engines have tens of millions of pages indexed.

  • A web site is like a report that is sent to the search engines. They need to be presented in the right order; this is called stacking.

  • Related pages should only carry links to each other, so that they do not send confusing messages; this is called clustering. These pages need to carry relevant information about the pages that they are linking with. These are called bait feed set-ups.

  • If a designer does not know how to do this, or does not understand why this works and attempts to do it anyway; instead of gaining top rankings on the search engines, these pages will have the complete opposite effect and fail to perform.

  • Where your web site is hosted will have a direct relation to how the search engines treat your web site for certain searches.

  • The type of server, how it is set up, the type of web sites also hosted on the server and their activities could have a serious influence on how the search engines treat your web site.

  • Submitting new web sites to the search engines can delay indexing of the new site for months, wasting valuable trading time. There are faster options.

  • Exchanging links does not help with link popularity or ranking. Most major search engines only count inbound links. Most link pages are not set up correctly and rarely deliver any meaningful traffic.

  • Google and a number of the other major search engines include, volume of content, traffic levels and the number of inbound links, (not reciprocal links) plus numerous other information, when calculating where and how to rank a new site. This makes it extremely difficult for a brand new site to gain top rankings, unless the search engine optimiser has the resources to overcome these problems.

When we design web sites, our search engine optimisers are taking all this into account, plus a hundred other aspects of web site design and optimisation.

Armed with this information, if you are talking to other web site designers, there are certain questions you should ask the designer to at least ascertain if they really understand what they are talking about.
